Prednisone

Prednisone is a synthetic corticosteroid medication and belongs to the immunosuppressant group, and affects the immune system. This drug is applied for treatment of inflammatory diseases and in higher doses this drug is indicated for treatment of cancers. For this drug is characterized by serious adverse side-effects. Prednisone is prescribed to treat arthritis, breathing problems, blood disorders, skin diseases, and eye problems. It reduces the response of the immune system to different diseases and helps to decrease allergic-type reactions. Prednisone inhibits the release of substances causing inflammation in the body. Corticosteroids affect the body very much, but they are characterized by great anti-inflammatory effects. Prednisone remains inactive in the body and to start working first should be transformed into prednisolone by the liver. So, patients having any liver disease may not experience an effective action of the drug.

Prednisone Uses

Take Prednisone exactly as indicated. Do not exceed a dose and do not take it for longer period of time than your doctor recommended. Your doctor may adjust a drug dose. This medication is designed for oral administration with a full glass of water or food if you experience stomach upset. If you take the liquid medication, measure the dose carefully with a special measuring device provided with a drug. Do not use a regular tablespoon when measuring because it does not provide a correct dose. Keep to the drug dosage schedule. Take a pill in the morning. Discuss with the doctor how to discontinue drug use slowly to avoid withdrawal symptom. In case if you suspect an overdose of Prednisone, immediately visit the doctor. Though a single high dose of Prednisone may not expect to produce life-threatening symptoms, caution is required.

Prednisone Precautions

Prednisone is not recommended if you have allergic reaction to Prednisone, or if you suffer from a fungal infection. Before taking Prednisone, inform the doctor about any infection or disease you have had within the past month. The doctor may advise Prednisone for you but with adjusted dosage if you have or ever had any of the following conditions: liver or kidney disease, diabetes, tuberculosis, thyroid disorder, malaria, myasthenia gravis, ulcerative colitis, stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, or depression or mental disease. Prednisone was assigned by FDA with a pregnancy category C. It means that Prednisone may harm an unborn baby. This drug may penetrate into breast milk and harm a nursing baby. Do not take Prednisone if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Prednisone Side-Effects

You should understand that despite any medication may cause adverse reactions, the benefit of the drug use may be greater than the risk of side-effects appearance. Discuss with the doctor all risks and advantages of this medication. During numerous clinical investigations many patients have been reported not to observe any side-effects at all. Side-effects of Prednisone may be experienced as mild and serious, and they are more likely to be increased and getting worse with higher doses. Side-effects of Prednisone include high blood pressure, weight gain, salt and fluid retention, potassium loss, headache, and muscle weakness. Prednisone may cause wound impaired healing, cataracts, glaucoma, puffiness of the face, bruising of the skin, stomach ulcer, irregular periods, obesity, and convulsions. Prednisone may also cause the following psychiatric disturbances: mood swings, euphoria, insomnia, psychotic behavior, and depression.
